How to read this, in plain English

You do not need any finance background. Here is the whole thing, simply.

What is the "top marginal rate"?

It is the tax rate applied to the highest slice of income, not to your whole income. Most countries tax in bands: the first chunk is taxed lightly, later chunks more. This shows the rate on the top band, which is the clearest single number for comparing how heavily a country taxes higher earners.

Why the real rate can be higher

Some countries add local or regional income tax, social security contributions, or surcharges on top of the national rate. So the true top rate in places like the United States, Canada, Switzerland, or the Nordics can sit well above the national figure shown here.

Why it matters

Tax is one of the largest recurring costs in a life, and it varies more across borders than almost anything else. A person with portable income can legally keep far more of it simply by where they are tax-resident, which is one of the central questions Sovereo helps people work through.

Where this comes from. Figures are top statutory personal income tax rates (highest marginal bracket) for 2025, drawn from public compilations by KPMG, PwC, and Trading Economics. They are national statutory rates; local or state income taxes, social security contributions, surcharges, and special expatriate or flat regimes can raise or lower the effective burden, and rates change with each budget. This is a comparison of headline rates for general education, not tax advice. Confirm any figure with a licensed professional before acting.
